As many other cities, Krakow has its own centuries-old history. There are lots of legends about the way it was found and developed. The city's name is associated with its legendary founder Prince Krakow. The name of this prince and his daughter Wanda bear the mounds of 7th and 8th centuries. They are located on the outskirts of Krakow. The first mention of it was in 965, and the flowering of the city came after 997, when Prince Mieszko I arrived in Krakow. He gave the lands to his son Boleslaw; during this period of time, it became one of the main residences of Polish rulers.
In 1320, was the first coronation in Poland of Prince Vladislav Loketeka in Wawel Cathedral. Reign of the last King Casimir the Great, in the second half of the 14th century, brought the prosperity and development to Krakow. At that time the city entered the circle of European culture, there was established the first Polish university. And in 1386, it became the capital of the vast Empire. In 1596, King Sigismund III Vasa moved the capital of the state in Warsaw. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Krakow was in decline because of the Swedish attacks, epidemics, fires, and lootings of Russian and Prussian troops.
In 1795, after the third partition of Poland, Krakow became a member of the Austrian Empire. In these times, it was an important center of the struggle for Polish independence. During World War II Krakow was the capital of the province; fortunately, it has survived and preserved the priceless treasures of culture and architecture. After the war the city has changed. On the outskirts was built the Steel Works.
Now Krakow blooms and admires the guests with its beauty, historic and architectural monuments, as well as the unique atmosphere. In 2000, Krakow was declared the city of European culture, since that time three-star hotels of Krakow open the doors to a big number of people from different world places every season.
