In 1320, was the first coronation in Poland of Prince Vladislav Loketeka in Wawel Cathedral. Reign of the last King Casimir the Great, in the second half of the 14th century, brought the prosperity and development to Krakow. At that time the city entered the circle of European culture, there was established the first Polish university. And in 1386, it became the capital of the vast Empire. In 1596, King Sigismund III Vasa moved the capital of the state in Warsaw. In the 17^th and 18^th centuries, Krakow was in decline because of the Swedish attacks, epidemics, fires, and lootings of Russian and Prussian troops.

In 1795, after the third partition of Poland, Krakow became a member of the Austrian Empire. In these times, it was an important center of the struggle for Polish independence. During World War II Krakow was the capital of the province; fortunately, it has survived and preserved the priceless treasures of culture and architecture. After the war the city has changed. On the outskirts was built the Steel Works.
